Keep Your Head Cool: 5 Tips for Working during a Heat Wave at Events and Festivals

It's sweltering hot, it's great fun to lie by the pool, but if you're working at a festival site or event these days, it's best to take the necessary precautions. We give 5 tips to keep your head cool.

If it gets too hot at work, you as an employee are entitled to a number of protective measures. This is very well arranged in industries such as construction, unfortunately not everyone is equally well informed in the event indursty.

These are the obligations in most countries for your employer in case of extreme heat:

  • provide protective equipment (sunscreen, headgear, ...) if you are exposed to direct sunlight
  • provide free customized refreshing drinks
  • install a ventilation system in the workplaces within 48 hours

If the nuisance continues, which may be apparent from, among other things, a survey of the employees, the employer must allow rest periods. The latter is not always evident during a hectic build-up of an event, which is already a race against time.

There are of course also precautions that you can take yourself. We give 5 tips:

  • Drink plenty of water. The heat makes you sweat and you lose moisture and therefore energy. If you drink too little, you get tired faster. Choose lukewarm tea instead of ice cold water. Cold drinks raise the temperature in your body.
  • Protect your skin. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 15 every two hours. Do not work with a bare torso and wear a t-shirt and cap. Work in the shade as much as possible. Do respect the safety regulations!
  • Try to start your workday as early as possible so that you can work into the cooler mornings.
  • Take breaks more often and postpone heavy work to a less hot part of the day if possible. If you work in a yard container or office, make sure there is sufficient ventilation.
  • Do not you feel well? Or do you see a colleague who is suffering from the heat. Consult a doctor.
