vzw Het Schelleke
- Oeverstraat 15, 9150 Rupelmonde, Belgium
The non-profit organization Het Schelleke from Rupelmonde keeps the local giant tradition alive and also brings its folkloric figures to events organized by other organizers. The association possesses a colorful group of giants and giant heads, each with its own connection to the history and folk life of Rupelmonde. For instance, the figures refer to the village's past as a seafarer and fisherman, the artist Gerardus Mercator, and well-known villagers.
For event planners, the presence of these giants can add a recognizable folkloric element to a parade, village festival, cultural event, or public day. The figures are rooted in regional tradition and therefore align well with programs centered on heritage, local identity, and folk culture. Some giants are made to march and dance in processions, while others are primarily associated with the annual parade in Rupelmonde. Discuss in advance which giants are available and what practical arrangements are required for participation.
The association also organizes the annual Schellekesfeesten in the Het Schelleke neighborhood. This tradition serves as the home base for the giant group and combines local folklore with festive activities. Het Schelleke is therefore not a party venue or rental location, but an association that uses its giants as living folklore at events. Organizers wishing to enrich their program with traditional giant figures can inquire with the association about the possibilities for a performance or participation in a parade.
