Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum

Set within the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park, the Lower Garden offers a distinctive setting for weddings, ceremonies, receptions and corporate gatherings. Its combination of landscaped outdoor spaces, water features and an indoor pavilion gives organisers several ways to shape an event around the garden’s natural scenery.

The venue includes garden paths, bridges, the Courtyard, the Pavilion Koi Deck and the Inamori Pavilion. The outdoor areas provide settings for ceremonies, photographs and guest mingling, while the Courtyard can also be arranged for dining or dancing. The covered Koi Deck offers an alternative for ceremonies when the weather turns wet. For a more intimate moment or photographs, the Japanese-style Azumaya gazebo adds another feature to explore.

The Inamori Pavilion can be booked as an indoor addition to a Lower Garden reservation. Organisers can choose one side of the pavilion, with views towards the pond, waterfall and bridge, or a side that connects conveniently with the Courtyard. The indoor space can accommodate seated dinners, with capacity depending on the layout, and larger cocktail-style receptions. A bridal suite or green room is also available for preparations, storage or coat check.

The garden’s event offering is well suited to couples seeking a setting with Japanese-inspired character, as well as organisations planning a reception or other private event. The venue also offers the option of using the Upper Garden’s Fujidana Plaza for ceremonies and cocktail hours with a larger guest count.
