On Saturday January 6, 2024, Mechelen became the vibrant heart of Europe thanks to “See us do”, the spectacular opening party of the EU presidency. For this special occasion, production house Sylvester transformed the city center of Mechelen into a dazzling cultural epicenter, a symbol of Flemish innovation, diversity, and European unity.

The event, which was free to the public, started with an afternoon of cultural, artistic and informative activities. In collaboration with Bart Vanvoorden, artistic director of the Nona arts center, a rich palette of arts was programmed, including dance, circus, slam poetry, street entertainment and stand-up comedy. This sophisticated mix offered something for everyone and was enthusiastically attended by a large and diverse audience.

In the evening the event reached a climax with a grand opening show on the Mechelen Grote Markt. In an iconic transparent canopy, which provided protection against the inclement weather and yet preserved the beauty of the location, the large audience could enjoy a dazzling spectacle. Under the leadership of conductor Dirk Brossé, the Prima la Musica orchestra took everyone on a musical trip, together with a line-up of top Flemish artists. Innovative audiovisual and graphic highlights lifted the experience to a top level. After a temporary disruption by pro-Palestinian activists, the show resumed and was received with even more enthusiasm by the audience.

“With the show we wanted to show how Flanders also makes Europe shine, with an emphasis on innovation and diversity. The enormous enthusiasm of the audience, artists and technicians shows that we have more than succeeded in our aim. The thunderous ovation after the European anthem spoke volumes and caused goosebumps everywhere.” – Geert Vanoverschelde, CEO Sylvester

The evening ended with a live performance by the electro-rock band Goose. This spectacular party was the perfect culmination of an event that not only highlighted an important political moment, but was also a showcase of Flemish cultural diversity and creativity.

More than 12,000 attendees braved the cold for “See Us Do,” and saw that it was good. Moreover, this event was broadcast on VRT MAX and VRT 1, so that a wide audience could enjoy it. With this prestigious cultural event, production house Sylvester succeeded in creating a unique experience that was both immersive and culturally enriching.
